Long Story Short (TL;DR) - What is Reddit?

Updated: Jun 16, 2023

Reddit is a social news aggregation and discussion platform that was founded in 2005 by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian. As of 2021, it is the 18th most visited website in the world, with over 1.7 billion monthly visits and 330 million active users.

One of the unique features of Reddit is its system of subreddits. As of 2021, there are over 130,000 active subreddits covering a wide range of topics, from news and politics to cats and memes. The most popular subreddit, r/funny, has over 36 million subscribers.

In addition to its community-driven content, Reddit is also known for its "upvote" and "downvote" system. When a user submits a post or comment, other users can vote it up or down based on its quality and relevance. The more upvotes a post receives, the more likely it is to be seen by other users.

Reddit also offers a range of features for businesses and marketers. According to a survey conducted by Hootsuite in 2021, 42% of Reddit users follow brand or business subreddits, and 74% of them have made a purchase after seeing an advertisement on Reddit.

Furthermore, businesses can create their own subreddits, advertise on the platform, and engage with customers through AMA (Ask Me Anything) sessions. Some notable brands that have used Reddit for marketing include Adobe, Nissan, and Coca-Cola.
